I am from: Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, Monterey County, California, USA (Perched on the windiest, northernmost bench of the appellation, just 21 miles from the chilling depths of Monterey Bay).
The Story: Talbott Vineyards is an absolute titan of Monterey County, carrying a four-decade legacy of defining what world-class, cool-climate California wine should be. The estate was founded in 1982 by Robb Talbott, whose family famously owned the prestigious Robert Talbott Tie Company. Inspired by childhood trips to Europe where he fell head-over-heels for the elegant, complex profiles of historic red Burgundies, Robb returned to California determined to find a terroir that could replicate that magic. In 1994, he acquired the crown jewel of the region: Sleepy Hollow Vineyard. Originally planted back in 1972, this legendary site has since been officially recognized as one of California's true "Grand Cru" vineyards.
What makes Sleepy Hollow an absolute viticultural marvel is its unique relationship with Monterey Bay’s "Blue Grand Canyon"—a massive, freezing underwater trench. Like clockwork every morning around 11:00 AM, intense, icy maritime winds and thick fog roll off the bay and sweep across the vineyard benches. This natural climate engine forces the vines to shut down photosynthesis for the day, acting as a natural brake that results in one of the longest growing seasons in the entire state. Today, under the watchful eye of winemaker Kamee Knutson, the certified sustainable estate treats the fruit with obsessive precision, utilizing advanced electromagnetic soil mapping to farm down to the individual row. In the cellar, the hand-sorted grapes undergo a warm fermentation to maximize extraction before being gently racked into premium French oak barrels, ensuring the vineyard's historic voice takes absolute center stage.
Why You'll Love Me: It is extraordinarily plush, beautifully structured, and wonderfully atmospheric—a medium-bodied Pinot Noir that masterfully pairs a deep, brooding core of dark fruits with a striking, savory mineral energy. In the glass, it pours a brilliant, translucent medium-garnet color. The nose is a deeply expressive and multi-layered playground, instantly launching into a fragrant bouquet of ripe black cherries, wild raspberries, and dark plums, seamlessly layered with complex undertones of fresh violet petals, dried sage, Earl Grey black tea, and a comforting, sweet whisper of vanilla bean and toasted mocha from the oak.
On the palate, it delivers a gorgeous structural ride; it registers broadly upon entry with a velvety, mouth-filling texture packed with flavors of blackberry compote and dark cherry gelée. Yet, it remains remarkably athletic and alive—a driving beam of racy, bay-chilled acidity cuts cleanly through the richness, while fine-grained, powdery tannins provide a polished architectural frame. It glides effortlessly across the tongue, sailing into an exceptionally long finish marked by a trailing touch of cracked white pepper, baking spices, and a clean, stony mineral snap.
