Style of Cider: Dry Heritage / Bittersweet Hard Cider
I am from: Sherborn, Massachusetts, USA (Crafted by Stormalong Cider)
The Story: Named in honor of the larger-than-life New England seafaring legend Captain Stormalong, this flagship cider is a heartfelt tribute to traditional, pre-Prohibition American cidermaking. Rather than relying on sugar and modern culinary apples, the cidermakers at Stormalong went to great lengths to source a meticulously curated blend of rare bittersweet and heritage apples—including Ashton Bitter, Dabinett, Ashmead's Kernel, and Yarlington Mill. By treating the fruit with the same respect a winemaker gives to grapes, they crafted a British-inspired, American-made cider that leans into a rich, tannic structure rather than cloying sweetness.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an incredibly crisp, bone-dry cider that truly drinks like a fine sparkling wine, containing less than three grams of sugar per can. It pours a brilliant, highly carbonated, intense golden hue in the glass. The nose immediately offers a complex, earthy bouquet of tart apple skin, bright lemon zest, and a subtle whisper of oak. On the palate, it delivers a deeply satisfying, tart bite. The bittersweet heritage apples provide a beautiful, tea-like tannic structure and a rich acidic backbone, washing away any expectation of heavy sweetness and coasting into an exceptionally clean, refreshing, and champagne-like finish.
