The Story: Founded in London in 1790 by George Sandeman, this iconic house is instantly recognizable worldwide by its legendary logo, "The Don"—the mysterious, caped figure wearing a wide-brimmed Spanish hat and a Portuguese student's cloak. While a standard 10 or 20-year-old port offers great energy, the 40-Year Old Tawny is a rare trophy. Master winemaker Luís Sottomayor meticulously creates this final blend from a selection of exceptional casks ranging from 30 to over 55 years of age. Decades of patient wood maturation breathe air into the liquid, concentrating the flavors and completely transforming a deep purple youth into a majestic amber-gold masterpiece.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an astonishingly complex, ethereal, and profound experience. It pours an old-gold amber hue and uncoils in the glass with an intensely perfumed bouquet of roasted hazelnuts, aged honey, dried apricots, and caramelized figs, seamlessly grounded by hints of cedarwood, dark vanilla bean, and oriental spices. On the palate, its opulent sweetness is matched note-for-note by a brilliant, vibrant thread of acidity that leaves the mouth feeling clean and alive, concluding with a magnificent, seemingly infinite finish of spun sugar, black tea, and refined wood spice.
