Romain Reverdy Sancerre Rouge
Pairs with: Seared duck breast with a tart cherry reduction, grilled Loire salmon, roasted pork loin with fresh rosemary, a classic charcuterie board, or earthy lentil and mushroom stews.
Good for: Surprising wine-loving friends who think Sancerre only makes white wine, enjoying a high-quality red during the warmer months, or acting as a refreshing, elegant counterpart to a cozy bistro-style dinner.
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir.
I am from: Sancerre AOC, Central Loire Valley, France.
The Story: While Sancerre is universally celebrated for its electric, flinty white Sauvignon Blanc, its red wines—crafted entirely from Pinot Noir—are one of France’s most delightful hidden secrets. The Reverdy family has been firmly rooted in Verdigny, an iconic winemaking village in Sancerre, for generations. In 2014, Romain Reverdy launched his own namesake label, blending deep family tradition with a fresh, modern commitment to sustainable farming. Sourced from steep, high-altitude vineyards rich in clay and limestone, this Sancerre Rouge is crafted with a gentle touch. Rather than chasing the heavy wood or deep extraction found in other parts of the world, Romain focuses on low-intervention techniques to let the bright, high-energy soul of the Loire Valley speak for itself.
Why You'll Love Me: It is crunchy, bright, and wonderfully lithe, trading heavy-handed muscle for pure, mouthwatering vitality. It pours a beautiful, translucent ruby-red color in the glass. The nose is instantly charming and highly aromatic, bursting with an energetic basket of fresh cranberries, wild raspberries, and tart sour cherries, intricately woven with subtle notes of cracked white pepper and wild rose petals. On the palate, it hits with a graceful, light-to-medium body supported by a laser beam of refreshing acidity and ultra-fine, silky tannins. It feels remarkably clean and refreshing on the tongue, gliding into a long, vibrant finish defined by a distinct line of chalky, wet-stone minerality and a playful hint of fresh garden herbs.
