Oddero Barbera d'Alba Superiore
Pairs with: Rich egg-based pastas like traditional Piedmontese tajarin with a savory wild mushroom or wild boar ragù, slow-roasted pork belly with a crisp crackling, classic osso buco, or a rustic platter of aged cheeses and cured meats.
Good for: Introducing a heavy-red lover to a wine that packs incredible punch and structure without relying on harsh tannins, anchoring a hearty Sunday family dinner, or adding an elegant, deeply gastronomic touch to an earthy, slow-cooked stew.
Grape: 100% Barbera.
I am from: Barbera d'Alba DOC Superiore, Piedmont, Italy (Sourced from prized, certified organic estate plots in the celebrated communes of Castiglione Falletto and La Morra).
The Story: With roots deep in the Langhe hills dating back to the late 18th century and estate-bottling since 1878, Poderi e Cantine Oddero is a historic titan of Italian winemaking. While the winery is globally revered for its legendary, long-lived Barolos, the family treats the native Barbera grape with that exact same aristocratic respect. Long guided by patriarch Giacomo Oddero, the reins of this historic house have seamlessly transitioned to his daughters, Mariacristina and Mariavittoria, who have ushered the estate into the future with certified organic farming. For this "Superiore" expression, they hand-select fruit from steep, sun-drenched hillsides where the vines dig into nutrient-dense calcareous marl and sandstone soils. Unlike simple, everyday Barberas that see a quick stainless-steel turnaround, this bottling spends a patient 16 months maturing in massive, traditional 50- to 60-hectoliter French oak casks (botti). This classic approach coaxes out a wonderfully polished, cellar-worthy structure while allowing the natural voice of the vineyard to sing.
Why You'll Love Me: It is robust, beautifully layered, and wonderfully expressive, executing a flawless high-wire act between generous dark fruit and a bracing, food-loving freshness. It pours an intense, luminous ruby-red color with distinct purple highlights in the glass. The nose is highly aromatic and complex, instantly greeting you with a dark basket of ripe black cherries, sweet plums, and wild blackberries, seamlessly interwoven with savory notes of cracked black pepper, anise seed, and a sophisticated whisper of fine cigar tobacco. On the palate, it hits with a full, enveloping body that feels incredibly plush yet remarkably light on its feet. Because the Barbera grape is naturally very low in harsh, drying tannins, the wine’s impressive structural backbone relies instead on a laser beam of classic, mouthwatering acidity and a distinct, steely mountain minerality, sailing into a long, savory finish.
