Good for: Serving as the absolute benchmark example of a joyful, ultra-drinkable "vin de soif" (wine for thirst); converting white wine devotees to the dark side with a light red meant to be popped directly out of the refrigerator; or sharing with a crowd of natural wine enthusiasts who revere the lineage of one of the world's greatest low-intervention winemaking families.

Grape: 100% Gamay.

I am from: Vin de France, Beaujolais, France (Meticulously hand-harvested from young, estate-tended vines rooted in the decomposed granitic sands of the family's legendary properties inside the Morgon Cru).

The Story: Domaine Marcel Lapierre is not just an estate; it is the spiritual birthplace of the modern natural wine movement. In the early 1980s, the late, legendary Marcel Lapierre, guided by the vision of traditionalist enologist Jules Chauvet, sparked a peaceful revolution in Beaujolais. Alongside a handful of peers dubbed the "Gang of Four," they completely turned away from industrial farming and heavy chemical adjustments to champion organic viticulture and zero-sulfur, native-yeast vinification. Today, Marcel's children, Mathieu and Camille, proudly carry the torch of this low-intervention legacy.

The playful name "Raisins Gaulois" translates to "Gallic grapes" or "French grapes"—a cheeky nod to its classification. While almost all the fruit for this cuvée is sourced from the family's prized Morgon vineyards, the Lapierres intentionally let these young vines yield a generous crop that surpasses the strict legal limits of the Morgon appellation. This high-yield strategy is an intentional masterstroke: it prevents excessive fruit concentration, naturally locking in a low alcohol level (typically 12% ABV) and a gossamer-light structure built for pure, uncomplicated consumption. In the cellar, the fruit undergoes an unmanipulated, 4-to-6-day semi-carbonic maceration without any added sulfur, resulting in an unfiltered liquid that represents the absolute definition of a casual bistro wine (vin de copains).

Why You'll Love Me: Served with a gentle, refreshing chill, it is an absolute landslide of crunchy red fruit, mouthwatering vibrancy, and joyful energy—a light-bodied, weightless red that slides across the palate with zero harsh tannic resistance. In the glass, it pours a beautiful, luminous translucent ruby with a youthful pink rim. The nose is a delightfully primary and breezy basket of fruit, instantly throwing out a fragrant bouquet of fresh wild strawberries, tart red currants, and wild cranberries, beautifully dusted with top notes of crushed violets, dried orange peel, and a soft, playful whisper of black pepper and herbal tea from the carbonic maceration. On the palate, it delivers a wonderfully slick, high-energy thrill ride; it floods the mouth with a pure, refreshing stream of tart cherry juice and raspberry coulis before a driving beam of crisp, granitic acidity completely cleanses the tongue. Weightless yet loaded with terroir character, it slips effortlessly down the throat, sailing into a clean, bone-dry finish defined by a trailing touch of spice and a persistent, stone-dust mineral snap.
