Jean-Max Roger 'Cuvée Marnes et Caillottes' Sancerre Blanc

$50.00

Pairs with: Classic warm Crottin de Chavignol goat cheese on toasted baguette, pan-seared sea scallops with lemon-herb beurre blanc, fresh oysters on the half shell, wild mushroom and spring asparagus risotto, or a roasted halibut fillet served over a bed of fennel and citrus salad.

Good for: Demonstrating how soil can completely re-engineer Sauvignon Blanc away from green, tropical mass-market styles toward sheer, chalky precision; elevating a raw bar or seafood dinner with authentic Loire tension; or treating lovers of refined French whites to a masterclass in dual-terroir blending.

Grape: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

I am from: Sancerre AOC, Loire Valley, France (Sourced from estate-tended vineyard plots across the villages of Bué, Amigny, and Sancerre, planted on a precise 50/50 split between Kimmeridgian marl and stony caillottes limestone).

The Story: Domaine Jean-Max Roger carries a winemaking heritage in the famed village of Bué that stretches back to the early 17th century. Today, Jean-Max’s sons, Thibault and Etienne, steer the historic family estate with a deeply ecological approach to vineyard management, focusing on mechanical weed control and soil revitalization to let the earth speak clearly through the glass. Their "Cuvée Marnes et Caillottes" is a brilliant architectural study in how complementary soils interact.

The wine draws equal parts from two distinct terroirs: Marnes (deep Kimmeridgian clay-marl rich in fossilized prehistoric oysters) endows the wine with structure, muscle, and broad textural depth, while Caillottes (shallow, sun-baked, extremely stony limestone) delivers delicate floral perfume, electric minerality, and razor-sharp agility. In the cellar, the hand-harvested fruit undergoes direct pneumatic pressing and a long, cool fermentation driven by native yeasts. Aged on its fine lees in stainless steel to build a silky, harmonious palate without any oak masking, the wine rests in bottle for several months before release to allow its complex mineral web to fully knit together.

Why You'll Love Me: It is a pristine, high-octane white that pairs electric, tongue-tingling citrus energy with a substantial, limestone-driven core. In the glass, it shines a bright pale straw with faint green-gold highlights. The nose immediately leaps out with a lifted, aromatic bouquet of fresh lemon zest, white grapefruit, and lemongrass, seamlessly framed by top notes of white peach, hawthorn blossom, crushed chalk, and damp slate. On the palate, it delivers an invigorating, chiseled ride; a succulent burst of green apple and tart lime juice is anchored by a rich, subtle lees texture before a roaring beam of crisp acidity sweeps across the mouth. Clean, bone-dry, and intensely refreshing, it sails into a lingering finish marked by a trailing note of grapefruit pith and a persistent, sea-salt mineral snap.
