I am from: Guidestone Rise Vineyard, Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California, USA.

The Story: Goldschmidt Vineyards is the brainchild of Nick Goldschmidt, a world-renowned, globe-trotting Kiwi winemaker who has spent decades directing some of the most prestigious wine programs across both hemispheres (including iconic stints at Simi and Allied Domecq). While Nick crafts ultra-premium, heavy-hitting cult Cabernets under his primary labels, he launched his family-focused portfolio as a deeply personal labor of love. Each wine in this collection is named after one of his children, and the "Chelsea" Merlot pays a proud, vibrant tribute to his eldest daughter, Chelsea Goldschmidt.

The fruit for this specific bottling is sourced entirely from Guidestone Rise, a prized vineyard plot nestled along the lower benches of the warm Alexander Valley. Here, 25-year-old vines (specifically Clone 181) dig deep into ancient river sandy loam soils. Unlike heavy clay beds which can cause Merlot vines to become overly vigorous, lazy, and bloated with water, this sandy, well-draining terrain forces the roots to struggle just enough. This naturally caps grape yields, concentrating the flavors and allowing the berries to achieve perfect phenolic maturity.

Nick applies an uncompromising, artisanal Old World approach to this California fruit, openly channeling a structured, Right Bank Pomerol-inspired philosophy. In the cellar, the grapes are gently handled, fermented cool, and tucked away to mature for 9 months in 100% French oak barrels (20% of which are brand new). To ensure the pure voice of the soil and the natural, mouth-coating texture of the vintage arrive in your glass entirely unmasked, Nick bottles the wine completely unfined and unfiltered.

Why You'll Love Me: It is extraordinarily silky, lively, and beautifully detailed—a premium California Merlot that successfully trades heavy, syrupy jamminess for a highly agile, lifted, and energetic structural framework. In the glass, it pours a brilliant, deep ruby color with youthful violet undertones dancing around the rim. The nose is a spectacularly expressive and fragrant playground, instantly launching into an energetic bouquet of fresh wild raspberries, red cherries, and black plums, seamlessly layered with elegant top notes of crushed rose petals, milk chocolate, and a comforting whisper of warm baking spices like cardamom and vanilla oak.

On the palate, it delivers a gorgeous, mouth-coating ride. It hits with a medium-to-full-bodied, velvety suppleness that wraps the tongue in a succulent core of plum skin, blueberry pie, and rich cocoa powder. Yet, it remains wonderfully refreshed and athletic—thanks to Alexander Valley's signature cool maritime nights, a driving vein of natural acidity and a touch of white pepper cut cleanly through the fruit weight. The tannins are remarkably fine-grained, smooth, and polished, guiding the blend into a long, elegant, and mineral-tinged finish highlighted by a lingering trail of black cherry and sweet wood spice.
