Château Côtes de Saint Clair Puisseguin Saint-Émilion
Pairs with: Rosemary-rubbed leg of lamb, classic duck confit, grilled ribeye steaks, slow-cooked beef stews, or a rustic charcuterie board with hard, aged cheeses like Comté
Good for: Introducing friends to high-value Right Bank Bordeaux, elevating a cozy Sunday roast, or enjoying a textbook, velvety French red without paying premium Saint-Émilion village prices
Grape: Predominantly Merlot (~70–89%), rounded out with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon
I am from: Puisseguin Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
The Story: Family-owned since 1948, Château Côtes de Saint Clair is located in Puisseguin, one of the official "satellite" appellations of Saint-Émilion. Perched slightly higher in elevation on beautiful clay-limestone slopes just northeast of the famous medieval village, these vineyards enjoy excellent sun exposure and natural drainage. The winery takes a traditional, pure approach to viticulture and vinification. To protect the authentic, juicy voice of their terroir, they typically ferment and age the wine entirely in temperature-controlled tanks. By keeping the wine 100% unoaked, they avoid masking it in heavy wood flavors, proving that Right Bank Bordeaux can be amazingly accessible, fresh, and deeply elegant in its youth.
Why You'll Love Me: It is silky, supple, and absolutely packed with smooth, mouth-coating fruit. It pours a deep, bright ruby color in the glass. The nose opens with an inviting, expressive bouquet of ripe wild blackberries, dark plums, and blueberries, beautifully accented by hints of ground baking spices, cedarwood, and dried mountain herbs. On the palate, it delivers a generous, medium-to-full body with a plush, textured mouthfeel. Driven by a fine thread of mineral-rich freshness and broad, well-integrated tannins, it glides into a long, satisfying finish with a subtle touch of dark cocoa and savory earth.
