I am from: Rioja Alta, Rioja DOCa, Spain (Sourced from the clay-limestone soils of the estate's premier Finca El Estanque vineyard in Haro)
The Story: Carlos Serres was a true visionary and a foundational pioneer of the modern Rioja region. A French oenologist from Bordeaux, he arrived in Haro and established his namesake bodega in 1896, becoming one of the historic "centenarian houses" of the region. He was instrumental in teaching local winemakers how to use French barrel aging techniques and famously spearheaded the very first exports of Rioja wines to the international market. For this Reserva, the grapes are hand-harvested from 35-year-old vines, fermented in traditional concrete vats, and then aged for 24 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, followed by another full year of smoothing out in the bottle before it ever leaves the cellar.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an incredibly smooth, elegant, and textbook expression of classical Rioja architecture that offers phenomenal value. It pours a beautiful bright cherry-red color with a subtle terracotta edge that proudly shows off its extended barrel age. The nose welcomes you with an inviting bouquet of ripe blackberries and dark plums, beautifully layered with secondary aromas of sweet vanilla, warm toffee, cinnamon spice, and a gentle hint of balsamic forest floor. On the palate, it delivers a medium-to-full body where the tannins have melted into a silky, powdery texture. A vibrant core of orange-peel acidity keeps the dense dark fruit feeling incredibly fresh, coasting into a long, persistent finish defined by hints of mocha, graphite, and a deep mineral spine.
