The Story: Cantina Colterenzio (also known by its German name, Schreckbichl) is a groundbreaking, next-generation cooperative composed of over 300 passionate winegrowing families. Together, they smash all the old-school preconceptions about co-ops, proving that a collective of humble farmers can consistently deliver some of the most transparent, top-flight, and terroir-expressive wines in Europe. The "Altkirch" bottling is a beautiful showcase for Chardonnay, a classic Burgundian variety that has comfortably called the rugged slopes of South Tyrol home for well over a century. The fruit is sourced from hillside vineyards perched at dramatic alpine elevations between 750 and 2,100 feet above sea level, where the vines dig deep into sandy soils layered over gravelly glacial deposits. To capture the pure, unadulterated voice of this mountain terroir, head winemaker Martin Lemayr handles the fruit with extreme care, fermenting the vast majority of the juice in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats (with just a tiny whisper of the must resting in large wooden casks). The wine then spends several months maturing on its fine lees, building a gorgeous textural harmony without ever relying on heavy oak manipulation.
Why You'll Love Me: It is bright, lively, and beautifully focused—a textbook example of cool-climate Chardonnay that favors mouthwatering alpine freshness and salty minerality over heavy, vanilla-laden wood makeup. In the glass, it pours a pale straw-yellow color with distinct, shimmering green reflections. The nose is highly expressive and effortlessly elegant, greeting you with a fragrant bouquet of crisp orchard fruits like green apples and Bartlett pears, beautifully intertwined with white flower blossoms, citrus zest, and a subtle tropical wave of fresh pineapple and mango. On the palate, it delivers a marvelous dance between silkiness and energetic vivacity, offering a medium-bodied weight that coats the mouth with zero heavy edges. A pure core of fruit and subtle lees-driven complexity is held perfectly aloft by a laser beam of mountain acidity, driving into a long, clean, and revitalizing finish accented by a crisp mineral snap and a lingering whisper of wild mint.
