Cadet d'Arthus Bordeaux
Pairs with: Classic steak au poivre, pan-seared duck breast with a plum reduction, herbed-butter roasted chicken thighs, savory meat pies, or a rustic platter of country-style pâté and aged cheeses.
Good for: Elevating your weeknight "house red" with authentic Right Bank character, pouring at a relaxed dinner party where everyone wants a smooth and reliable European classic, or introducing someone to a Bordeaux that favors soft charm over intense, drying tannins.
Grape: Merlot and Cabernet France.
I am from: Bordeaux AOC, Right Bank, France (Sourced from choice vineyard plots situated just at the foot of the historic village of Saint-Émilion).
The Story: Cadet d'Arthus is crafted under the watchful eye of Maison François Janoueix, a historic family-run house whose Bordeaux roots date back to 1898 when they arrived from a small village in Corrèze. The wine draws its name from Château d'Arthus, a gorgeous late-18th-century chartreuse (a traditional manor house) built entirely out of golden Saint-Émilion stone in the nearby commune of Vignonet. While the estate's top-flight bottles are built for decades of serious cellaring, the "Cadet" (the traditional French term for the younger brother) is intentionally designed as a wine of pure pleasure and everyday sharing. The vines dig into rich, sediment-heavy sandy-gravelly soils that soak up the afternoon sun, pushing the Merlot grapes to perfect, plush ripeness. The family handles the fruit using modern, low-capacity concrete vats to ferment each plot individually, followed by a patient 12 months of maturation in French oak barrels. It is a thoughtful approach that delivers a taste of elite Right Bank pedigree without the elite price tag.
Why You'll Love Me: It is remarkably supple, friendly, and beautifully balanced, completely rewriting the script for anyone who thinks Bordeaux is always stiff, dusty, or unapproachable in its youth. It pours a clean, vibrant ruby-red color in the glass. The nose is highly expressive and instantly inviting, bursting with a dark fruit basket of ripe blackcurrants, juicy plums, and wild cherry compote, seamlessly interwoven with elegant accents of dried thyme, cocoa powder, and a subtle hint of cedar. On the palate, it hits with a perfectly proportioned medium body and a wonderfully plush, velvety mouthfeel. Silky, well-melted tannins provide just enough structural support without ever getting in the way of the juicy fruit, while a refreshing undercurrent of classic French acidity drives the wine into a clean, harmonious finish touched by a faint whisper of warm baking spice.
