I am from: IGP Val de Loire, Loire Valley, France.

The Story: The story of Bernier is a tale of family heritage and a touch of delicious rule-breaking. It is crafted by the Couillaud family at Château de la Ragotière, a historic estate in the western Loire Valley with viticultural roots stretching all the way back to 1370. This specific region, sitting just 22 miles east of Nantes near the Atlantic Ocean, is world-famous for Muscadet (made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape). However, in 1978, visionary brothers Bernard and François Couillaud realized that the cool, breeze-swept maritime climate was also an absolute paradise for other varieties. Defying local convention, they planted Sauvignon Blanc. Today, Bernard’s daughter, Amélie Couillaud-Dugué, and her husband Vincent steer the estate. Because these vines sit outside the traditional regional boundaries for the grape, the wine is classified as an IGP Val de Loire—a bureaucratic technicality that works entirely in your favor, delivering elite French winemaking pedigree at a fraction of the price.

Why You'll Love Me: It is bright, soft, and beautifully balanced, offering all the pristine, thirst-quenching energy of the Loire Valley but with a noticeably gentler, friendlier edge. In the glass, it pours a pale straw-yellow color with shimmering, clean reflections. The nose is highly expressive and instantly charming, greeting you with a fragrant basket of fresh pink grapefruit, juicy honeydew melon, and lime zest, subtly woven with delicate notes of white pear and a fresh hint of green grass. On the palate, it avoids the sharp, enamel-stripping bite common in some cool-climate whites. Instead, the winemaking team allows the juice to rest on its fine lees in stainless steel vats, a traditional method that imparts a subtle, velvety roundness and a beautifully smooth texture. This perfectly cradles the wine’s natural, lively acidity before gliding into a clean, crisp finish highlighted by a refreshing kiss of sea-breeze salinity.
