The Story: In a region famous for muscular, blockbuster red wines that are heavily extracted and coated in new oak, Antídoto is exactly what its name implies: a literal "antidote" to heavy-handed winemaking. It is the brilliant creation of French winemaker Bertrand Sourdais (formerly of Dominio de Atauta and Chinon) and his partner David Hernando. They bypass the commercial center of Ribera del Duero to farm in Soria, the remote, far-eastern province known as the "rooftop of Ribera." Here, the climate is much cooler and the vineyards sit at a breathtaking 3,000 feet above sea level. Because the soils are dominated by sand, clay, and limestone, the microscopic pest phylloxera couldn't survive. As a result, Antídoto is crafted from a mosaic of over 300 tiny plots of un-grafted, pre-phylloxera old bush vines ranging from 30 to 80 years old. Sourdais practices a very gentle, soft vinification using native yeasts and ages the wine in large, 600-liter French oak barrels (only 25% new) to ensure the barrel frames the fruit rather than smothering it.

Why You'll Love Me: It is an absolute revelation of freshness, poise, and fluid elegance that beautifully blends the aromatic finesse of a great Rioja with the deep, soulful backbone of Ribera del Duero. It pours a deep, opaque garnet with a vivid violet rim. The nose is spectacularly vibrant and primary, bursting with fresh black cherries, wild blueberries, and dark plum skins, laced with notes of dried thyme, allspice, and a soft, smoky floral perfume. On the palate, it delivers a medium-to-full body that feels incredibly pure and light on its feet. Its cool-climate origins translate to a pulsing, mineral acidity that effortlessly carries its juicy core, structured by ultra-fine, chalky, and velvety tannins that float into a long, clean, and beautifully savory finish.
