Alvaro Palacios Camins del Priorat
Pairs with: Grilled prime strip steak, slow-simmered pappardelle bolognese, roasted leg of lamb rubbed with dried rosemary and thyme, a savory wild mushroom risotto, or artisanal Spanish chorizo flatbreads.
Good for: Introducing yourself or a friend to the intense, slate-driven world of Priorat without emptying your wallet; serving as a vibrant and highly sophisticated center-table red for dinner parties; or gifting to someone who loves bold reds but appreciates Old World restraint and elegance.
Grape: A traditional regional blend led by Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), rounded out by Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
I am from: Priorat DOCa, Catalonia, Spain (Sourced from over 90 old-vine plots spread across nine historic hillside villages, including Gratallops, Porrera, and Torroja).
The Story: Alvaro Palacios is a household name in modern winemaking—widely revered as one of the legendary "Pioneers of Priorat." In the late 1980s, Alvaro left his family's established estate in Rioja and traveled to the rugged, steep, and then-forgotten hills of Catalonia. Alongside a small band of visionary friends, he helped rescue the region's ancient, abandoned vineyards, single-handedly transforming Priorat into one of the most prestigious, sought-after wine capitals on earth. While he is globally famous for producing ultra-exclusive, multi-hundred-dollar cult icons like L'Ermita and Finca Dofí, he created "Camins del Priorat" (meaning "Paths of Priorat") to serve as an open-hearted, accessible "handshake" into the region.
Rather than focusing on a single vineyard, Alvaro meticulously sources fruit from a patchwork of nearly 100 small, family-owned plots across the appellation. These vines cling to vertigo-inducing terraces carved directly into llicorella—Priorat’s famous, shimmering bedrock of ancient dark slate and quartzite. In the cellar, Alvaro avoids the heavy, over-extracted style of the past. The fruit is fermented with native yeasts in a combination of stainless steel, concrete, and large oak vats, followed by a short, four-to-eight-month rest in seasoned wood. This intentional, low-intervention approach ensures the raw energy of the slate and the purity of the harvest arrive in your glass entirely unmasked.
Why You'll Love Me: It is extraordinarily vibrant, juicy, and beautifully balanced—a modern Priorat that skips heavy, jammy heat or aggressive oak sweetness in favor of a sleek, athletic, and highly perfumed framework. In the glass, it pours a deep, translucent ruby-purple color. The nose is a lively, atmospheric playground, bursting with an energetic bouquet of fresh red plums, wild black raspberries, and ripe cherries, seamlessly interwoven with elegant nuances of dried lavender, wild rosemary, cracked white pepper, and a distinctive, stony whiff of graphite and wet slate.
On the palate, it hits with a smooth, medium-to-full-bodied entrance. Its fleshy core of ripe dark berry fruit and pomegranate juice is flawlessly anchored by a refreshing line of Mediterranean acidity and exceptionally fine, chalky, and slightly chewy tannins. It glides effortlessly across the tongue, pulling into a long, beautifully dry finish highlighted by a mouthwatering saline-mineral crunch and a lingering, bright touch of mandarin orange peel and savory spices.
