Elizabeth Rose Napa Chardonnay
Pairs with: Classic garlic-butter shrimp scampi, roasted chicken thighs with lemon and thyme, pan-seared wild salmon with a lemon-herb drizzle, or a creamy wild mushroom risotto.
Good for: Wine drinkers who crave the luxurious texture of Napa Valley Chardonnay but absolutely detest heavy, over-oaked "butter bombs"; keeping an organic, high-value overachiever on hand for weeknight indulgence; or serving as a versatile white that effortlessly bridges crisp freshness with a satisfying, creamy weight.
Grape: 100% Chardonnay (Organically Grown).
I am from: Yountville, Napa Valley, California, USA (Sourced from the Hoxsey family's historic, organically farmed estate plots, primarily the Block House and MorgaenLee vineyards).
The Story: Elizabeth Rose represents a gorgeous intersection of multi-generational Napa Valley history, sustainable family farming, and deep personal legacy. Operating under the prestigious Ghost Block Estate Wines portfolio owned by the Pelissa and Hoxsey families, the brand is backed by a family that has been cultivating premium Napa vines for over a century. The label itself was born as a heartfelt tribute to Kendall Elizabeth Hoxsey-Onysko, the fifth-generation scion and eldest daughter of Andrew Hoxsey, emerging on her 21st birthday when her father gifted her a bespoke, custom-crafted barrel of wine. Today, the winemaking has come beautifully full circle, meticulously steered by Kendall's husband, winemaker Jeff Onysko.
To build the wine's unique architectural depth, Jeff masterfully blends fruit from two iconic estate parcels in the cool Yountville appellation: the Block House Vineyard (planted in 2010 on a mixture of Cole Silt Loam and Yolo Loam) and the MorgaenLee Vineyard (planted in 2015 on Yolo Loam). Even though both blocks are planted with the exact same Dijon Chardonnay clones, they feature completely opposing row orientations. This subtle geographic twist alters how the morning and afternoon sun kisses the grapes, resulting in two entirely distinct, complementary flavor profiles at harvest.
In the cellar, Jeff rejects the heavy-handed oak manipulation typical of commercial Napa whites. Only 50% of the juice is fermented and matured for nine months in neutral French oak barrels with regular lees contact, while the remaining half is kept entirely in stainless steel to trap fresh fruit chemistry. This thoughtful approach coaxes a luxurious, velvety volume out of the wine without ever burying the pure fruit under heavy layers of smoky vanilla extract or flabby malolactic fat.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an absolute masterclass in structural harmony—a medium-bodied, stunningly pure white that offers a lush, velvety, mouth-coating experience seamlessly balanced by a vibrant, athletic spine of acidity. In the glass, it pours a brilliant, clear straw-yellow with youthful silver and emerald reflections. The nose is beautifully expressive and multi-dimensional, instantly greeting you with a fragrant bouquet of crisp green apples, ripe Bartlett pears, and Meyer lemon zest, layered with elegant top notes of white flowers, fresh honeydew melon, and a comforting, faint hint of warm vanilla and toasted almonds.
On the palate, it delivers a gorgeous structural ride. It hits with a broad, silky, and unctuous mid-palate density that coats the tongue with flavors of white peach, lemon curd, and subtle quince. Yet, it never defaults to heavy or flabby weight; a driving beam of zesty, mouthwatering acidity cuts cleanly through the richness, carrying the wine into a remarkably long, bone-dry finish highlighted by a refreshing, flinty mineral snap.
