Pairs with: Classic Wiener Schnitzel with potato-cucumber salad, grilled river trout with herb butter, roasted chicken with spring vegetables, soft goat cheeses, or lightly spiced Asian noodle dishes and dim sum.
Good for: Tasting a quintessential Austrian field blend crafted by the family who first bottled the historic style; enjoying a light-to-medium-bodied white with vibrant acidity and textural depth; or serving a versatile, eco-certified food wine at summer gatherings.
Grape: Traditional Austrian field blend (co-fermented mix of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Traminer).
I am from: Vienna / Niederösterreich, Austria (Sourced from biodynamically farmed estate vineyards across the limestone, clay, and gravel soils of Mauer, Oberlaa, and the Nussberg hills).
The Story: While field blends were historically a survival strategy for local winemakers across Austria, Weingut Zahel holds a unique place in wine history as the first estate to put the words "Gemischter Satz" on a label, championing the style's evolution from a casual tavern (Heuriger) staple into a world-class wine. Today, fifth-generation winemaker Alexander Zahel leads the family estate under strict Demeter biodynamic practices, crafting wines that honor the natural rhythm of Vienna’s unique urban vineyards.
Unlike traditional single-varietal wines, Alexander Zahel's Gemischter Satz is created by interplanting up to six white grape varieties in the same vineyard plot. The grapes are hand-harvested together on the exact same day and co-fermented spontaneously in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts. Bypassing oak aging to protect the pure mineral drive of the soil, the wine rests on its fine lees before bottling, allowing the distinct personalities of each grape—from Grüner's peppery bite to Riesling's electric freshness and Chardonnay's silky texture—to weave into a harmonized whole.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an invigorating, aromatically layered, and mouthwatering white that balances bright alpine freshness with a satisfyingly round, textured mid-palate. In the glass, it pours a pale, shimmering straw-yellow with pale green reflections. The nose is lifted and expressive, bursting with scents of crisp green apple, Williams pear, white peach, and lemon peel, intricately laced with top notes of blooming jasmine, lemongrass, and a crack of white pepper. On the palate, it delivers a lively, focused stride; a succulent stream of citrus and orchard fruit is lifted by a driving beam of natural acidity and buffered by a delicate, satiny mouthfeel. Clean, bone-dry, and endlessly drinkable, it sails into a long, refreshing finish marked by a trailing note of lime zest and a persistent, stone-dust mineral snap.
