Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet
Pairs with: Freshly shucked raw oysters (the ultimate, legendary regional pairing), grilled prawns brushed with garlic-herb butter, crispy fish and chips with a squeeze of lemon, a vibrant zucchini and lemon risotto, or a tangy wedge of young goat cheese or feta.
Good for: Replacing your standard Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc with a zesty French alternative, chilling down for a scorching summer afternoon on the patio, or acting as the absolute, rock-solid benchmark bottles to show someone what authentic maritime wine tastes like.
Grape: 100% Picpoul Blanc (historically known as the grape that "stings the lips" due to its electric natural acidity).
I am from: Picpoul de Pinet AOP, Languedoc, France (Nestled on the edge of the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast, right on the banks of the Bassin de Thau saltwater lagoon).
The Story: Headed by the talented family winemaker Claude Jourdan, Domaine Félines Jourdan is widely revered as one of the ultimate, quality-driven guardians of the Picpoul de Pinet appellation. While the Jourdan family has been deeply rooted in Languedoc viticulture for generations, they officially took ownership of this historic estate in 1983. The name "Félines" holds a fascinating historical twist: long before it was a premier vineyard, the estate's specific mix of clay and sand made it famous during the Roman Empire for producing high-quality bricks. Today, the vines are still peppered with ancient Roman stone markers that once guided travelers traveling from the Mediterranean toward the Atlantic.
What makes Claude’s vineyards truly magical is their proximity to the water. The estate’s primary plots hug the shores of the Bassin de Thau—a massive, shimmering saltwater lagoon world-famous for its pristine oyster and mussel beds. While the wider Languedoc region can experience blistering summer heat, these coastal vines bask in a crucial microclimate paradox. During the parched summer nights, cool, humid maritime breezes roll off the lagoon and the sea, naturally air-conditioning the vines. This slow cooling allows the thin-skinned Piquepoul grapes to ripen beautifully while perfectly locking in their trademark, lip-smacking acidity. In the cellar, Claude handles the fruit with extreme care, using a pneumatic press and cool, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve a nakedly pure snapshot of her coastal terroir.
Why You'll Love Me: It is incredibly bright, hyper-refreshing, and beautifully architectural—a classic, bone-dry white that wraps a juicy, fleshier fruit texture around a driving, electric core of ocean energy. In the glass, it pours a beautiful pale yellow color with bright silver and greenish reflections. The nose is exceptionally expressive and fragrant, instantly launching into a lively bouquet of fresh acacia blossoms, lemon verbena, and crisp green apples, seamlessly layered with complex undertones of white peach, fresh fennel, honeysuckle, and a distinct, mouthwatering puff of salty sea spray. On the palate, it hits with an energetic, tongue-tingling crunch. While the wine's signature tangy acidity immediately commands your attention, it is beautifully supported by a surprisingly tender, ample mid-palate packed with lime zest and pear gelée. It glides effortlessly across the mouth before pulling into a long, exceptionally clean finish defined by a refreshing saline mineral snap and a bright citrus pop that begs for a plate of seafood.
