I am from: Los Sauces, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina (Sourced from a single-vineyard plot climbing 3,400 feet above sea level).
The Story: The driving force behind Chaiken Vineyards is a fascinating, full-circle story of heritage and transatlantic passion. Founded by Dr. Barry Chaiken—a Boston-area physician and healthcare expert who nurtured a lifelong love affair with fine wine—the project was born out of a deep desire to honor his family's roots. Generations after his grandparents originally immigrated to America, Barry followed a magnetic pull back to South American soil, choosing Argentina's premier wine country to build an artisanal viticultural legacy of his own.
Tucked into the pristine, high-elevation landscapes of Los Sauces in Mendoza’s cool-climate Uco Valley, the estate completely rejects the region's massive industrial-scale standard. Operating as a hyper-focused micro-project, the team relies on strict low-yield viticulture and meticulous hand-picking. Production is famously limited to a mere 1,500 bottles for this flagship single-vineyard Malbec. The grapes are vinified in small, artisanal batches and cradled through a patient 14 months of aging in French oak barrels before bottling, trading corporate commercialism for an authentic, highly personal expression of Andean terroir.
Why You'll Love Me: It is bold, beautifully concentrated, and wonderfully complex, giving you all of the luscious, plush fruit you crave from a premium Mendoza red while maintaining an elegant, old-school structure. In the glass, it pours a dense, ink-like ruby-purple color with bright, youthful violet rims. The nose is highly expressive and instantly captivating, greeting you with a ripe symphony of dark plums, wild black cherries, and sweet blackberries, beautifully layered with elegant top notes of blooming lilacs, fresh tobacco leaf, and a sophisticated whisper of vanilla bean. On the palate, it hits with a rich, full-bodied frame and a satisfyingly velvety texture. Thanks to the high-altitude vineyard position, its dense core of dark mountain fruit never feels heavy or jammy; instead, it is perfectly balanced by a vibrant beam of natural acidity and firm, powdery tannins, before pulling into a long, smooth finish touched by a lingering kiss of sweet oak spice and cocoa.
