The Story: In the sunny highlands of the state of Washington, Owen Roe winemaker David O'Reilly has been producing wine of the highest quality since 1999. His vineyards are located in the southern center, where Yakima Valley is a high desert region and home to 11,000 acres of vineyards. With plenty of sunshine, availabie of water, and a diverse range of microclimates, it's an ideal location for winemakers and viticulturists to grow and craft exceptional wine. This wine was originally introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard’s surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated well with the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine which has since been produced yearly.
Why You'll Love Me: Ex Umbris opens on the nose with dark fruits and a touch of minerality before lingering aromas give way to blackberry and blueberry on the palate. Subtle black pepper and licorice notes follow before a finish that reveals tannins that are structured yet smooth. A great wine to drink now or cellar for a few years, this is an excellent example of Washington's blossoming relationship with this grape.
