Piattelli Vineyards Malbec/Tannat Cafayate
Pairs with: A prime, thick-cut Argentine ribeye grilled over an open wood flame, slow-roasted leg of lamb rubbed with wild rosemary and chili flakes, a smoky rack of barbecued beef ribs, or a hearty, slow-cooked wild boar stew.
Good for: Introducing your dinner table to the intense, wild magic of extreme high-altitude winemaking; upgrading a backyard barbecue with a muscular, deep red that won't get drowned out by smoke; or experiencing a brilliantly rugged, ink-dark alternative to standard Mendoza Malbecs.
Grape: An equal 50/50 blend of Malbec and Tannat.
I am from: Cafayate Valley, Salta, Argentina (Perched at an extreme alpine altitude of over 5,700 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains).
The Story: Piattelli Vineyards is a fascinating, bi-regional powerhouse masterminded by the Malinski family, operating two distinct, state-of-the-art wineries: one in the traditional heartland of Mendoza, and the other in the wild, northern frontier of Salta. While Mendoza is world-famous for producing smooth, velvety, and approachable reds, it is their gravity-flow estate in the rugged Cafayate Valley that captures the untamed, dramatic soul of the Andes. Up here, the vineyards climb to staggering elevations near 6,000 feet, surrounded by multi-colored, layered geological rock formations. The climate is a landscape of extremes—blistering, unshielded alpine sunlight during the day followed by icy, bone-chilling mountain nights. To survive these brutal diurnal shifts, the grapevines naturally react by growing incredibly thick skins, packing the fruit with an astonishingly high concentration of color, tannin, and natural polyphenols.
For this striking Reserve cuvée, the winemaking team leans heavily into this intense mountain identity by co-fermenting Malbec alongside Tannat. Historically a fiercely rustic variety native to Southwest France (and the national grape of Uruguay), Tannat thrives beautifully in Salta's high-desert air. While the Malbec brings its signature plush, voluptuous black fruit and elegant floral tones to the party, the Tannat acts as an architectural anchor—injecting a massive spine of firm structure, savory complexity, and deep, ink-like coloration. Hand-harvested and handled with absolute care to keep the fruit primary and pure, this is a beautifully modern, unadulterated snapshot of one of the highest viticultural regions on earth.
Why You'll Love Me: It is bold, fiercely dark, and beautifully dramatic—a full-bodied powerhouse that seamlessly marries the juicy, fruit-forward charm of Malbec with the muscular, structured grip of Tannat. In the glass, it puts on an absolute show, pouring a near-opaque scarlet-red with deep ink-black contours and bright violet rims. The nose is exceptionally potent and complex, instantly filling the room with a lush bouquet of ripe black cherries, dark plums, and blueberry pie, seamlessly interwoven with intriguing top notes of dark chocolate orange, fresh eucalyptus, dried figs, and roasted black olives. On the palate, it delivers a deeply satisfying, mouth-filling entrance. The dense, concentrated core of dark mountain fruit luxuriously coats the tongue, but it is immediately met by a serious, firm, and wonderfully chewy framework of tannins. Thanks to the crisp alpine air, the wine never feels flabby or jammy; instead, a vibrant beam of natural acidity cuts cleanly through the weight, driving the blend into a long, beautifully dry finish marked by a lingering trail of savory spice and cracked black pepper.
