Michele Satta Piastraia 2021
Pairs with: Rosemary-crusted Bistecca alla Fiorentina, slow-braised wild boar ragù over hand-rolled pappardelle, roasted rack of lamb with a black olive tapenade, rich duck confit, or an artisanal platter of aged Pecorino Toscano and truffled prosciutto.
Good for: Introducing collectors to a beautifully classical, non-industrial side of Bolgheri that swaps over-extracted sweetness for authentic Tuscan soul; thrilling fans of high-scoring Super Tuscans who want intense structural muscle balanced by brilliant freshness; or opening an exceptional 2021 bottling that is currently entering its prime drinking window.
Grape: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 20% Sangiovese.
I am from: Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Tuscan Coast, Italy (Sourced from ancient, low-elevation estate vineyard plots including Torre, Poderini, and Campastrello, rooted in a unique matrix of marine clay and sandy loam soils).
The Story: Arriving in coastal Bolgheri in 1974, founder Michele Satta rapidly established himself as one of the zone's most influential patriarchs—even consulting on the original vineyard plantings for legendary estates like Ornellaia and Masseto before establishing his own winery in 1982. First released in 1991, "Piastraia" holds an indelible place in Italian wine history as the very first wine in the entire territory to adope the official Bolgheri Rosso designation, later rightfully elevated to Superiore status as the estate's vines matured into deep complexity. Today, under the direction of Michele’s son Giacomo, the family continues to fiercely reject heavy-handed, mass-market "recipe" winemaking in favor of an elegant, terroir-driven house style. For this spectacular 2021 vintage, each grape variety was fermented completely separate using only spontaneous wild yeasts in truncated-conical oak casks, followed by a patient 18 to 24 months of maturation in French oak barriques (only 20% new) to beautifully meld the structural authority of the Bordeaux varieties with the racy, high-toned acid engine of the native Sangiovese.
Why You'll Love Me: It is a breathtaking masterclass in coastal tension and structural refinement—a full-bodied, deeply layered red that seamlessly pairs an opulent, mouth-coating fruit richness with a sleek, athletic, and savory grace. In the glass, it pours a concentrated, deep ruby-red that reveals youthful, shimmering violet glints around the rim. The nose is a spectacularly deep, cerebral playground, instantly launching into an alluring bouquet of black currants, black cherries, and fresh pomegranates, beautifully shaded by complex undertones of wild mint, violet petals, new leather, and a sophisticated, iron-like mineral streak. On the palate, it delivers a gorgeous, multi-dimensional ride, hitting the tongue with a dense, unctuous volume packed with flavors of dark berry gelée, cocoa powder, and cedarwood before a driving beam of vibrant, sea-breeze-born freshness sweeps across the mouth. Supported by a masterful matrix of exceptionally polished, compact, and fine-grained tannins that provide a rock-solid architectural frame, it glides effortlessly into a long, majestic finish highlighted by a trailing touch of savory Mediterranean herbs and a clean, stone-dust mineral snap.
