Good for: Enjoying an authentic, small-batch expression of Saint-Estèphe without paying grand cru prices; treating a Bordeaux enthusiast to a hidden, 2-hectare boutique gem; or elevating a cozy weekend dinner with a red that perfectly blends classic Left Bank muscle with an unusually plush texture.

Grape: A traditional, Left Bank-dominant blend featuring approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

I am from: Saint-Estèphe AOC, Left Bank, Bordeaux, France (Sourced from a tiny, 2-hectare parcel resting on a privileged limestone-and-gravel plateau).

The Story: While Saint-Estèphe is globally renowned for its towering, powerhouse Classified Growths, Domaines Pédro offers a look into the heart of the appellation's artisanal, family-run side. The family's viticultural legacy stretches back to 1830, but the modern story truly ignited in the early 1960s when Jacques Pédro set out to meticulously restore a patchwork of historic, neglected vineyard plots. Today, the family manages 14 hectares in Saint-Estèphe—most of which goes into their flagship Château Lavillotte—but it is their microscopic adjacent property, Domaine de la Ronceray, that stands out as a uniquely velvet-gloved expression of this rugged northern Médoc terroir.

Comprising just 2 hectares of exceptionally placed old vines, Domaine de la Ronceray sits on a prominent, sun-drenched plateau. Here, the soil is an ideal matrix of porous, caillouteux (stony) gravel over a solid, limestone sub-bedrock. While Saint-Estèphe is historically famous for heavy clay soils that produce brooding, highly tannic blockbusters that require decades to soften, the higher concentration of stone and chalk on this specific plateau provides elegant water regulation and a more approachable structure for the vines.

Under the watchful eye of technical director Sébastien Fraysse, the grapes are treated with the exact same prestige methods applied across the family's top châteaux. The fruit is hand-sorted and subjected to a patient, traditional long vatting to extract deep color and flavor. The juice is then aged for 12 months in meticulously selected French oak barriques before being bottled without collage (fining) or filtration. Finally, the bottles are stored in a spectacular, hand-stacked underground cellar—carved directly into the limestone bedrock—where perfect natural temperatures and humidity let the wine age beautifully until it is ready to shine.

Why You'll Love Me: It is robust, beautifully rounded, and exceptionally harmonious—delivering all of the deep concentration and classic, muscular architecture you expect from Saint-Estèphe, but with an unusually generous, velvety texture. In the glass, it pours a deep, dark ruby color with vibrant purple highlights dancing around the rim. The nose is highly expressive and instantly complex, greeting you with an energetic bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, wild blackberries, and dark plums, seamlessly intertwined with sophisticated layers of toasted vanilla bean, warm espresso grounds, dried cedarwood, and a distinct puff of sweet tobacco leaf.

On the palate, it delivers a deeply satisfying, medium-to-full-bodied experience. A dense, fleshy core of black fruit luxuriously blankets the tongue, flawlessly anchored by a refreshing vein of cool-climate acidity. Its structural tannins are remarkably fine-grained and supple, providing a sturdy, age-worthy frame without ever feeling overly astringent or harsh. It glides effortlessly across the palate, sailing into a long, warming finish marked by a lingering kiss of sweet baking spice and a graphite mineral crunch.
