I am from: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, Southern Rhône Valley, France.

The Story: Created in 2001, the "Cuvée du Baron" is a direct, liquid tribute to one of the most legendary figures in wine history: Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié. After marrying into this historic estate (which dates back to the 18th century) following his service as a decorated WWI fighter pilot, the Baron spearheaded a fierce legal movement in the 1930s to combat wine fraud and protect regional boundaries. His groundbreaking efforts directly established the framework for the entire French Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system, officially crowning Châteauneuf-du-Pape as France's very first regulated appellation. Today, his descendants carry on his strict quality motto—"less wine, but better wine"—farming the property's iconic sun-baked round pebbles (galets roulés), sand, and red clay. The grapes are 90% destemmed and aged for 18 to 24 months in traditional large oak casks to let this historic terroir truly shine.

Why You'll Love Me: It is rich, brooding, and intensely complex, utilizing its uniquely generous helping of Syrah to inject a striking, long-lived structural spine into the warm, opulent Grenache. It pours a deep, brilliant ruby-red color with shimmering purple highlights. The nose is highly expressive and dark, bursting with a concentrated bouquet of blackberry jam, blackcurrants, and sweet liquorice, seamlessly intertwined with savory hints of black olive tapenade, new leather, and smoky graphite. On the palate, it hits with impressive density, unrolling a velvety, mouth-coating texture framed by fine-grained, muscular tannins. A refreshing line of mineral tension keeps the ripe black fruit feeling remarkably poised, driving into a long, savory finish accented by fresh mint, cocoa, and a playful kick of spice.
