I am from: Horse Heaven Hills AVA, Columbia Valley, Washington, USA.

The Story: For over 125 years, the Mercer family has been deeply rooted in the rugged, sun-drenched landscapes of Washington's Horse Heaven Hills. Originally focusing on livestock and traditional crops, they made a visionary gamble in 1972 by planting some of the very first wine grapes in the region—an area now universally celebrated as a world-class viticultural paradise. Named after a dramatic topographical landmark on their estate, Dead Canyon Ranch refers to the steep, rugged canyon lands where these specific vines thrive. Planted along both edges of the canyon, roughly three miles south of the original family farmstead, the grapes are forced to struggle against intense desert sun, rocky silt loam soils, and the howling, unrelenting winds sweeping off the Columbia River. To handle this concentrated fruit, the winemakers ferment the grapes gently to preserve their raw energy, followed by 16 months of aging in American oak barrels to beautifully polish its bold, estate-grown personality.

Why You'll Love Me: It is a rich, deeply concentrated, and texturally magnificent crowd-pleaser that successfully marries lush New World fruit with a sophisticated, savory edge. It pours a dense, near-opaque ruby-purple color in the glass. The nose is highly expressive and instantly inviting, greeting you with an aromatic riot of blackberry pie, ripe cassis, and sweet dark plums, intricately woven with secondary notes of brown sugar, warm baking spices, and a subtle, smoky hint of flint. On the palate, it hits with a generous, full-bodied presence and a wonderfully smooth, mouth-coating texture. Concentrated flavors of dark berries are held beautifully aloft by a refreshing undercurrent of acidity and a classic Cabernet whisper of green bell pepper, while fine, powdery tannins provide a gentle, structure-defining frame that carries effortlessly into a long, toasty finish laced with vanilla and sweet oak.
