I am from: Grieve Vineyard, Lovall Valley, Napa Valley, California, USA.

The Story: Waypoint Wines operates as a brilliant, terroir-hunting platform, partnering with none other than legendary master winemaker Philippe Melka to craft single-vineyard expressions from some of California's most exclusive, hidden micro-pockets. With this stunning bottle, Melka shines a spotlight on the Grieve Vineyard, tucked away inside the ultra-remote and secretive Lovall Valley.

Pronounced "love-all," Lovall Valley is a tiny, hidden hilltop bowl that physically straddles the mountain ridge separating southern Napa and Sonoma valleys. Despite its official Napa Valley AVA pedigree, it functions viticulturally like a remote extension of the Sonoma Coast. The valley forms a natural geographic trap for thick, cold marine fog rolling inward from the nearby San Pablo Bay. This protective blanket covers the vines from early evening straight through midday, making it one of the absolute coolest growing regions in the entire Napa appellation.

Grounded in unique Perkins gravelly loam and ancient ocean-floor silt soils, the gnarled vines undergo a slow, measured crawl to maturity. In the cellar, Philippe Melka skips the standard cold-and-sterile stainless steel approach. To honor the fruit's immense concentration, the juice is treated to a highly deliberate, artisanal program that incorporates barrel fermentation and aging in premium French oak. This traditional, Bordeaux-style treatment coaxes a luxurious, waxy mid-palate density out of the grape without ever dampening the electric, chiseled natural acidity of this unique, fog-chilled terroir.

Why You'll Love Me: It is incredibly complex, beautifully texturized, and deeply poignant—a serious, medium-to-full-bodied Sauvignon Blanc that masterfully bridges the gap between old-world, mineral-driven Graves Blanc and sun-kissed California precision. In the glass, it pours a shimmering, pale straw-gold highlighted by yellow-green glints. The nose is a remarkably deep and cerebral playground, starting quiet before unfurling into a complex bouquet of glazed apples, grilled lemon rind, and ripe quince, seamlessly layered with elegant top notes of white flowers, jasmine, and a sophisticated puff of crushed limestone, wild thyme, and toasted almonds.

On the palate, it hits with a gorgeous structural contradiction. The subtle oak integration provides a beautifully rounded, creamy, and unctuous mouthfeel that luxuriously blankets the tongue with layers of lemon curd and white peach. Yet, it never defaults to flabby weight—a striking, mouthwatering beam of cool-climate maritime acidity instantly punches through the mid-palate, creating an energetic line of tension that sails into an exceptionally long, dry finish marked by a distinct saline-mineral crunch and a lingering kiss of ginger and soft wood spice.
