Chateau La Freynelle Bordeaux Blanc
Pairs with: Fresh oysters on the half shell, a warm goat cheese and arugula crostini, grilled branzino drizzled with a lemon-herb butter, freshly steamed Dungeness crab, or a light summer pasta tossed with basil pesto and grilled zucchini.
Good for: Upgrading your backyard patio happy hour with a serious injection of French elegance, matching the briny snap of fresh seafood without clearing out your wallet, or showing a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc devotee how a classic French blend brings a whole different level of texture and floral complexity.
Grape: A traditional, beautifully balanced white Bordeaux blend featuring 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Sémillon, and 10% Muscadelle.
I am from: Entre-Deux-Mers AOC, Bordeaux, France (Sourced from sun-drenched clay-limestone ridges in the historic village of Daignac).
The Story: The sprawling history of Château La Freynelle officially ignited in 1789, right as the French Revolution was reshaping the nation. Patriarch Jean Barthe looked out over the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers—the triangular, maritime cradle of land nestled between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers—and decided to plant his very first grapevines. For more than two centuries and seven consecutive generations, the Barthe family carefully passed down this pristine estate from father to son.
That unbroken line took a historic, radical turn when Véronique Barthe inherited the property at the age of 22. Stepping directly into the cellar, Véronique became the very first female winemaker and owner in her family’s multi-century legacy. In a traditional, heavily male-dominated Bordeaux wine world, she quietly stood her ground, modernized the vineyards, and earned a fierce global reputation for crafting stunningly precise, affordable wines that consistently outperform their pedigree.
To craft her signature Bordeaux Blanc, Véronique handles her sustainably farmed estate vines with absolute precision. While the Sauvignon Blanc brings the driving energy and the Sémillon adds structural weight, the quirky, highly aromatic Muscadelle adds a delicate floral perfume. In the cellar, each parcel is vinified separately at cool temperatures inside stainless steel vats. To elevate the wine above basic, razor-sharp table whites, Véronique allows a partial malolactic fermentation to occur. This brilliant touch tempers the grape's biting acids and frames the wine with a gentle, subtle creaminess before it is bottled early to capture the raw, naked energy of the harvest.
Why You'll Love Me: It is bright, texturally fascinating, and remarkably aromatic—a dry, refreshing masterpiece that seamlessly weaves a zesty, citrus-fueled crunch with a velvety, rounded weight. In the glass, it pours a beautiful pale straw-gold color highlighted by shimmering emerald glints. The nose is a spectacularly inviting playground, greeting you with an energetic burst of lemon peel, pink grapefruit, and crisp green apples, beautifully layered with elegant top notes of blooming honeysuckle, acacia, white peaches, and a faint, sophisticated hint of beeswax and fresh tarragon. On the palate, it delivers a gorgeous structural surprise; it hits with a smooth, medium-bodied fleshiness and a lovely, polished mouthfeel courtesy of the Sémillon. Yet, it remains wonderfully zippy and alive—a driving, mouthwatering line of acidity perfectly balances the weight, carrying notes of lemon gelée and clean stone fruits into a long, bone-dry finish defined by a clean, flinty mineral snap.
