Fado Reserva Friendship Red
Pairs with: Grilled steak frites, slow-roasted pork shoulder, a hearty Portuguese feijoada (bean and pork stew), wood-fired mushroom pizza, or a rustic platter of aged cheeses and dry-cured chorizo.
Good for: Anchoring a large, casual dinner party with an overachieving crowd-pleaser that punches way above its price tag; fueling long, soulful late-night conversations with close friends; or introducing a Malbec or Cabernet lover to the velvety blending magic of coastal Portugal.
Grape: A traditional, rich blend primarily featuring Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Alicante Bouschet, and Syrah.
I am from: Vinho Regional Lisboa, Portugal (Sourced from sun-drenched, Atlantic-influenced rolling hillsides northwest of Lisbon).
The Story: The inspiration behind Reserva d'Amizade "Friendship Fado" is bound to a beautiful cultural trilogy: "Fado, Friendship, and Wine." In Portugal, Fado is the hauntingly beautiful, deeply expressive traditional music that captures the absolute essence of life’s passion, longing, and destiny. The family-run estate of Paço das Côrtes wanted to craft a bottle that captured that exact emotional depth. For them, a world-class wine shouldn't be locked away in a stuffy, exclusive cellar; it is a catalyst for community—meant to be poured generously among lifelong friends to turn everyday moments into lasting memories.
To bring this vision to life, the estate partners with one of Portugal’s most iconic and celebrated enologists, António Ventura (honored as the nation's "Winemaker of the Year" in both 2006 and 2013). Tapping into the unique geography of the Lisboa IG region, António sources fruit from rolling hillside plots positioned between the hot interior plains and the cool Atlantic coast. This placement provides a brilliant climate engine: the intense Iberian sun bakes the vineyards by day, allowing the thick-skinned Alicante Bouschet and Tinta Roriz to achieve opulent ripeness, while crisp, misty maritime breezes sweep in at night to keep the grapes' natural acidity perfectly intact. In the cellar, António handles the fruit with a contemporary, fruit-forward touch, balancing a slow extraction with patient aging in seasoned French oak barrels to ensure the wood serves as a subtle, velvety frame rather than a mask.
Why You'll Love Me: It is bold, incredibly smooth, and beautifully comforting—delivering all of the deep, muscular fruit concentration you crave from a rich red in a remarkably polished and velvety package. In the glass, it pours a dense, deep ruby color with shimmering purple reflections. The nose is a delightfully aromatic and inviting playground, instantly greeting you with a lush bouquet of ripe black plums, wild blackberries, and dark cherries, seamlessly layered with complex undertones of dark cocoa powder, fresh tobacco leaf, and a distinct, warming wave of balsamic and sweet baking spices. On the palate, it hits with a medium-to-full-bodied embrace that completely fills the mouth. Its dense, sweet core of dark mountain fruits and black licorice is flawlessly anchored by a clean vein of Atlantic freshness, keeping the richness perfectly lively and digestible. The tannins are wonderfully mature, fine-grained, and supple, gliding effortlessly into a long, harmonious finish accented by a lingering kiss of cracked black pepper and dark chocolate.
