Chateau Paran-Justice St. Emilion Grand Cru
Pairs with: Beef Wellington with a red wine jus, roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, duck breast with a cherry reduction, or moderately mature cheeses like Comté
Good for: Elevating a special Sunday roast, cellaring for a few years to watch it evolve, or treating a Bordeaux lover to an authentic Right Bank classic without the stratospheric price tag
Grape: ~86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc (varies slightly by vintage)
I am from: Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux, France
The Story: Nestled in the commune of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, Château Paran-Justice sits right at the base of the majestic, sun-drenched limestone slopes just down from the famous Château de Pressac. The estate gets its name from the early 1900s unification of two neighboring historic properties—Château Paran and Château Justice. Spanning roughly 11 hectares, this vineyard is farmed with a deeply environment-focused philosophy (certified organic/AB). The owners even utilize traditional horse-drawn plowing instead of heavy machinery to protect the ancient clay-limestone soils. The grapes are carefully harvested by plot, gravity-fed into temperature-controlled tanks, and matured for 12 to 14 months in fine French oak barrels.
Why You'll Love Me: It offers the classic, elegant, and structured personality that made Saint-Émilion legendary. It pours a deep, bright ruby-red color, unfurling with a delicate yet highly charming nose of ripe dark plums, black cherries, and wild raspberries, accented by notes of baking spices, graphite, and toasted cocoa. On the palate, it delivers a fresh, medium-to-full body bursting with juicy plummy fruit. The structure is impeccably balanced, featuring fine-grained, velvety tannins, a lively mineral backbone, and a long, seamless finish where the wood spice is masterfully integrated.
