Grape: A traditional Southern Rhône blend featuring approximately 70%–80% Grenache masterfully balanced with 20%–30% Syrah.
I am from: Côtes du Rhône AOC, Southern Rhône Valley, France (Sourced from 50-year-old vines rooted in a classic terroir of nutrient-rich red clays and smooth, heat-absorbing river pebbles).
The Story: While Maison Lavau is highly respected today for its pristine, top-tier estates across celebrated appellations like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Rasteau, the "Koudiat" cuvée represents the emotional, beating heart of the family's history. The Lavau family's winemaking legacy originally took root across the Mediterranean in North Africa, where they settled in 1895. There, patriarch René Lavau turned a small estate into Tunisia's most prominent wine operation in the early 20th century. "Koudiat" translates directly to "hill" in Arabic, and this bottle was created by brothers Benoît and Frédéric Lavau as a profound homage to the historic, sun-drenched family wine their father would lovingly blend every vintage during those golden days.
To honor this ancestral style, the brothers source fruit from exceptional, 50-year-old low-yielding vines. In the cellar, they completely cast aside the modern industrial playbook of heavy oak aging. The hand-picked grapes are fully de-stemmed and undergo a slow, cool-temperature fermentation entirely within stainless steel tanks. Left to mature peacefully in steel to lock in its natural vibrancy, this approach guarantees that the naked, unadulterated voice of the Southern Rhône sunshine arrives in your glass entirely unmasked by wood sugars.
Why You'll Love Me: It is remarkably plush, playful, and wonderfully quaffable—a medium-to-full-bodied red that trading aggressive, heavy extraction for a supple texture and open-hearted fruit generosity. In the glass, it pours a brilliant, vivid ruby-red with youthful violet glints around the rim. The nose is a spectacularly expressive and fragrant playground, instantly greeting you with a lush basket of ripe black cherries, wild strawberries, and cassis, seamlessly interwoven with elegant top notes of black tea, dried lavender, and a faint, savory undercurrent of sage and crushed black peppercorns. On the palate, it delivers a beautifully rounded, mouth-filling embrace. Its dense, sweet core of dark berry fruit luxuriously coats the tongue, effortlessly held aloft by a clean vein of natural acidity and incredibly sleek, powdery tannins. It glides seamlessly across the mouth before pulling into a long, smooth finish touched by a lingering kiss of sweet baking spices and a sun-baked mineral grip.
