Pairs with: Fresh goat cheese (such as Sainte-Maure de Touraine or Valençay), pan-seared scallops with lemon-herb butter, trout amandine, steamed clams, vegetable quiche, or fresh sushi and sashimi.
Good for: Experiencing the electric, chalk-driven precision of top-tier dry Loire Chenin Blanc; discovering why the historic hill of Brézé is regarded as an elite white wine terroir; or pouring an un-oaked, highly refined white that seamlessly balances high-wire acidity with a silky mid-palate.
Grape: 100% Chenin Blanc.
I am from: Saumur AOC (Brézé), Loire Valley, France (Sourced from the organically and biodynamically farmed single vineyard Clos du Midi, planted on shallow sandy-clay soils atop porous white tuffeau limestone bedrock).
The Story: Domaine Arnaud Lambert is widely recognized as one of the primary architects behind the modern renaissance of Saumur and the historic winemaking hill of Brézé. Dedicated to certified organic and biodynamic viticulture, Lambert works meticulously to reveal the distinct terroir voice of each walled single vineyard (clos) across his estate. Tucked into the cool, sun-dappled landscape of Brézé, the Clos du Midi site benefits from an ideal south/east exposure where bright daytime sun is tempered by gentle ocean-influenced breezes and deep limestone reserves.
In the cellar, Lambert maintains a precise, low-intervention approach designed to express pure grape character without oak interference. The hand-harvested Chenin Blanc grapes undergo gentle whole-cluster pressing followed by a cool fermentation in stainless steel vats and concrete tanks. Completely bypassing new oak barrels, the wine rests on its fine fermentation lees for several months to build a subtle, satin-like mid-palate roundness. This patient lees contact cushions the grape's soaring natural acidity while preserving the signature chalky tension of Brézé’s white tuffeau soils.
Why You'll Love Me: It is an electrifying, aristocratic, and bone-dry Chenin Blanc that strikes a perfect balance between high-wire citrus energy and silky, polished elegance. In the glass, it gleams a pale, shimmering straw-yellow with subtle greenish reflections. The nose is wonderfully precise and aromatic, wafting out with a lifted bouquet of crunchy green apple, Bosc pear, lemon flesh, and white peach, elegantly threaded with top notes of white jasmine blossoms, citrus zest, and crushed chalk. On the palate, it delivers immediate drive and structural tension; a succulent core of orchard fruit and citrus is carried by a beam of mouthwatering acidity, buffered by a delicate, creamy mouthfeel. Clean, focused, and intensely refreshing, it sails into a long, dry finish marked by a trailing touch of grapefruit pith and a persistent, saline mineral snap.
