Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Dry Riesling
Pairs with: Cracked pepper crackers and Camembert
Good for: Being surprised by Australian Riesling
Grapes: Riesling
I am from: Eden Valley, South Australia
The Story: There’s a strong argument for calling Riesling Australia’s signature white grape, and some of the best come from the blustery hillsides of Eden Valley, which Wine Enthusiast called a “quality benchmark” for the variety. No winery represents the region better than Pewsey Vale. Wine writers have been declaring its Rieslings among the best in the world since 1854, largely thanks to the stellar terroir. At 1640 feet of elevation, the gently rolling hills are bathed in golden sunlight yet cooled by mountain winds. The vines, planted in shallow, rocky soils, bring forth Rieslings with concentrated, intense flavor.
Why You'll Love Me: Pale straw-green center, with silver reflections throughout. Striking nose of salty lime peel, white nectarine, lemon blossom, wet rock, and watermelon rind. The palate is clean, sleek and effortless, with beautiful vibrancy and lift. There is a directional persistence to the wine, but all the edges are polished and refined.
